To commemorate the International Youth Day (12 August), the International Disaster Risk Reduction Day (13 October), and the World Tsunami Awareness Day (5 November), UNESCO-IOC Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) and the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWMS) jointly with U-INSPIRE Indonesia is organizing a series of activities on Indian Ocean Youth Short Video Competition on Tsunami Awareness.
Theme for this year
Despite being the largest share in the world’s demographic and the most potential group of people, the youth are also the most at risk. The youth commonly have the smallest voice when it comes to engagement in development, while they will be highly affected by that development. Similarly, in disaster risk reduction, including tsunami hazards, the youth also have less opportunity to voice and be involved in community preparedness and capacity building.
Increase the knowledge of Indian Ocean youth on the topic of Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness
Increase the participation of Indian Ocean Youth in tsunami awareness and preparedness in the region.
Encourage and upskill Indian Ocean youth in the creation of content for social media and other communication outlets, in particular on the topic of Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness
Contribute to the commemoration of the World Tsunami Awareness Day
The competition will be divided into four groups:
Open for youth from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka
Open for youth from Comoros, Maldives, Mauritius, Singapore, Seychelles, Timor-Leste and France La-reunion.
Open for youth from India, Pakistan, Iran, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen
Open for youth from Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, and Madagascar.

Developing & Creating Impactful Tsunami Awareness Video

This webinar discusses the power of storytelling in video creation. It emphasizes finding impactful stories through personal experiences and using them to connect with the audience. The author outlines key elements for crafting a story, including conflict, objective, stakes, and tone. It then details the video production process, from research and development (planning the story) to pre-production (scriptwriting, storyboarding) to production (filming) and post-production (editing, sound design).

Winners were announced on November 10, 2021 during the Indian Ocean World Tsunami Awareness Day Event. The winner has been confirmed by the judges following the strict judging process. It was disclosed since the beginning that the jury’s decision cannot be contested. It was clearly recorded that the final decision has been agreed upon by the jury based on the assessment criteria.
On Youth Pledge Day, we don’t need to talk at length about the contributions of young people to our country. Through this short video, I invite us all to take a closer look at how the knowledge of our youngest generation, Sarifa (10 years old), can have a positive impact on her community in Tompe, South Sulawesi.

We know that there were many losses that occurred due to lack of knowledge. We try to celebrate the grief by adding knowledge. Disasters must continue to be discussed so that we continue to remember and learn. Did you know that a tsunami can happen suddenly?
Commonly we think that a tsunami always starts with an earthquake. What about those that are not caused by an earthquake?
Atypical tsunami or non-tectonic tsunami happened caused by landslides, volcanic eruptions, and the fall of large objects such as meteors into the water, not like typical tsunamis that happen only because earthquakes.
